Teacher’s Day celebrations on Friday have occasioned a series of controversies for the Narendra Modi government. As southern parties, including the ruling BJP’s allies PMK and MDMK, criticized the “renaming” of the day as “Guru Utsav”, Education Minister Smriti Irani sought to clarify that there was no such move; this was just the title of an essay-writing competition.
